At the end of October I ran a poll on twitter (but shared publicly on my Facebook page also asking a simple (so I thought) question:
The options on the poll (which is limited to 4 on Twitter Polls):
    • Watch Netflix
    • Go to a museum/gallery
    • See a play/opera
    • Other (Please comment)
Hindsight is beautiful as we all know as I really should have put something about reading in there but felt ‘Other’ would provide a catchall.
Surprisingly on Twitter alone there were 501 votes.  Mainly felt originally that ‘my followers’ would skew the results to be (obviously) museums but I have to say a) my followers are diverse from museums/galleries, digital/tech, theatre/opera, publishing/book/libraries, and loads of just fun people that like to chat. Same goes for my Facebook (although add in family, friends and school mates who some I don’t even remember but our school was so small I am sure I know them).

    The results from Twitter:
    • 16% Watch Netflix (80.16 out of 501)
    • 37% Go to a museum/gallery (185.37 out of 501)
    • 25% See a play/opera (125.25 out of 501)
    • 22% Other (Please comment) (110.22 out of 501)
Although Museum/gallery ‘win’ it doesn’t give a true snapshot.  On Facebook there were 16 additional comments  (it’s public to see here).
    • +1 vote Watch Netflix (81.16 out of 517)
    • +7 votes Go to a museum/gallery (192.37 out of 517)
    • +3 See a play/opera (128.25 out of 517)
    • +5 Other (Please comment) (115.22 out of 517)
      • +3 Go Outside
      • +1 Creative Thinking
      • +1 Spa
I also copied the ‘Others’ responses from Twitter to Facebook to be transparent and this is a breakdown of the 33 answers (these are part of the 501 votes):
    • +19 Go Outside
    • +2 Creative Thinking
    • +2 Travel
    • +2 Shopping
    • +2 Reading
    • +1 Live Music
    • +2 Pub
    • +1 Gaming
    • +2 Eat Good Food
Totalling the ‘Others’ we have from Twitter and Facebook:
    • +22 Go Outside
    • +3 Creative Thinking
    • +2 Travel
    • +2 Shopping
    • +2 Reading
    • +1 Live Music
    • +2 Pub
    • +1 Gaming
    • +2 Eat Good Food
    • +1 Spa
I was also contacted privately (emails, DM’s etc) by 8 people about being a museum person but not wanting to be seen as not putting ‘Museum/Gallery’ as main answer and would rather ‘Be Outside’ (6) or ‘Watch Netflix’ (2) but these are not included overall.

Something at was interesting is when one person recognized ‘If money is no object’ all hell broke loose.  For example, the two who responded Shopping also mentioned flights to NY or Paris to do the shopping).  Same for the two who responded Travel.  My thinking of ‘money is no object’ was to allow those who feel culture isn’t for them to know they were part of this survey.  Lessons learned.

Obviously this isn’t scientific but sometimes a random Poll is interesting to run to gather a snapshot.  To address that my followers are mainly museum people, I would like to also point out that this was Retweeted 31 times and mainly were from non-followers.
